Parakeets are one of the most loving and social of the small hookbill family.  With an average life span of 9-12 years they have a tendency to become a well loved member of the family.  Most of our parakeets are aviary raised although from time to time we do have hand raised ones. Following you will find a list of instructions that will help to make the transition from our home to yours less stressful for you and your new family member.
1.  The cage should be of a size as to allow the bird to spread its wings and move freely about the cage even with an assortment of toys. Don't forget that they have a long tail. The cage should be placed in a well lit, smoke free, draft free environment, away from cats or dogs and not in direct sunlight. Remember that they are very social and do not like to be away from the family.
2. Set up the cage the way you'll want it with the food, water and toys. If the seed cups have covers, please remove them until the bird is comfortable and eating well. Please do not use newspapers as the ink can be toxic and it will discolor the bird and cage.
3. Place the bird very gently in the cage and allow the bird 24-48 hours of quiet before beginning to handle. It is very important that he/she begin eating with in 24 hours. If he/she does not begin to eat with in this time PLEASE call us immediately! Birds do not store enough body fat to go for extended periods of time without eating and drinking.
4. The bird should have available to it at all times the following items:
     a. fresh seed b. fresh pellets
     c. fresh water with vitamins d. millet spray
     e. gravel d. fresh fruit or veggie
5. The water should be changed each day, the seed freshened by cleaning out the empty hulls, pellets replenished and fruits and veggies replaced.
6. Parakeets need love and attention each day and lots of toys to keep their active minds and beaks busy.
For the birds safety we highly recommended keeping their wings clipped so that they don't fly into windows or out doors or any other hazard that a house can hold.
7. It is very important to monitor your pets eating habits and its droppings for any change. If you feel that the bird is not eating enough or the droppings are loose or that it is inactive in any way PLEASE call us immediately!
Here is a list of foods that we feed to our parakeets: Parakeet diet, Lafebers pellets, Poulsbo bread, orange, apple, millet spray, gravel, vitamins, cuttlebone, kale, collard greens and mustard greens. You will find many other suggestions in your book.

IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS AT ALL PLEASE GIVE US A CALL!
