A new family member is coming home with you, which will create great excitement and chaos in your home. Here are some important things to remember. 1. A young kitten must eat and rest often. It will reduce stress for everyone if you set up the kitten's litter box, bed, food and water in a small room (IE the bathroom never the laundry room) and keep the kitten confined to this area for at least the first 2 weeks when you cannot specifically watch him/her. This will allow you to monitor the kitten's eating and potty habits without allowing any bad habits to get started while he/she learns about it's new home and adjusts to it's new life. This method of introduction into a new home works well for both young and old cats alike. In the case of a home that already has another cat(s), it allows the established cat(s) time to become curious about the new arrival instead of feeling invaded by it. 2. Try not to change your kittens diet or give too many treats. Going to a new home can be stressful enough without causing loose stools with a diet change. Please do not give any milk. Kittens lose the digestive enzymes to digest milk when they stop nursing. 3. Cats & kittens need to play and exercise. Toys and a scratching post will help to keep them out of trouble and away from your furniture. Cats have a need to scratch. Their claws grow out, creating a itchy feeling. We do NOT endorse declawing and feel this is an unnecessary procedure, as it involves the amputation of the first knuckle of each toe. We are happy to recommend behavioral modifications and other options to please both you and the cat. Store excess toys away and change them around to keep you kitty from becoming bored. 4. Be very cautious using flea products on young kittens, but regular grooming is a very important part of a kitten's training. Regular grooming sessions with love will insure that as an adult they will enjoy the attention and that flea control will be much easier. 5. Children under 5 years of age should be supervised while around the cat or kitten ( and viceversa) as the cat will view them as a sibling of its own and play with the child as such (with claws and teeth). And young children tend to fall easily which can endanger a kitten's life. Young children tend not to have developed empathy yet and do not understand that an animal can not be picked up by it's tail, legs, or head. 6. When adopting from us as stated in the contract if for any reason you are unable to keep the cat that we want this cat/kitten back. One thing that all of us tend to over look is in the untimely event of our death that our pets be looked after. Your will should provide for your animals in general terms so the animals you have now or may acquire in the future are included. Let your family and friends know your wishes regarding your animals and ask them in advance if they are willing to care for your animals. 7. The pros and cons of one kitten or two. Cats are social and nocturnal by nature. Two are not any more trouble than one. They keep each other occupied at night while you are trying to sleep versus one which is keeping you up at night. 8. Watch for signs of a runny nose, runny eyes, loose stools, lack of appetite, lethargy, or limping. Illnesses can debilitate a kitten/cat quickly. The faster they are caught the faster he/she will recover. If you adopted your kitten/cat from us please do not hesitate to call us immediately. 9. If you adopted your kitten from us and it is under 6 months old, make sure to mark your calendar with the expiration date of the spay/neuter certificate. Females should be spayed between 5-6 months of age and males neutered between 6-7 months of age. You should make the appointment in advance so that you can take advantage of the certificate before it expires and that your new friend does not become reproductive before you know it. They grow up fast!
